Uefa moots ditching Champions League anthem as part of review

1327715110 71 Uefa moots ditching Champions League anthem as part of review

Uefa is understood to be considering an update to the look and feel of the brand in a bid to create a more unified identity across the 53 member countries it operates in.

Initially, the refresh will be for the corporate brand, before rolling it more widely to consumers.

It is understood to be looking at appointing a branding agency to carry out the work and it is unknown which of its tournaments will be affected by the update.

However, according to one source familiar with the matter, the operatic music used during the broadcast of Champions League matches is also up for review, and its idents could be replaced.

The Uefa Champions League anthem dates back to 1992 and was written by Englishman Tony Britten. Britten was commissioned by Uefa to adapt Handel’s composition, ‘Zadok the Priest’.

The chorus is played before each Uefa Champions League game, and at the start and end of TV broadcasts of the matches.

The review will take place after this year’s European Championships in Poland and the Ukraine.

This will be the last time broadcasting and advertising rights for major championships will be negotiated by individual countries.

The rights will be sold centrally for the Uefa Euro 2014-16 qualifiers and the 2016-2018 FIFA World Cup European qualifiers.

A spokesperson for Uefa said: “We are regularly reviewing our brands, including the respective music, but do not have further details to give on this topic for the time being.”

Republican lawmakers defer to AG on Poliquin

1327713912 89 Republican lawmakers defer to AG on PoliquinJanuary 19 Leaders say the constitutionality of his business activities wasn’t raised before he was appointed treasurer.

By John Richardson Media State House Writer

AUGUSTA — State Treasurer Bruce Poliquin’s private business activity was never discussed as a potential issue when lawmakers chose him for the job, Republican leaders say.

And they declined to pass judgment on the matter Wednesday, a day after a Democratic lawmaker asked the attorney general to determine whether the activity violates the Maine Constitution.

"I’m not a lawyer. It’s in the hands of the attorney general," said House Speaker Robert Nutting, R-Oakland.

"I guess I’d defer to the attorney general," said Senate Majority Leader Jonathan Courtney, R-Springvale. "I don’t think we even thought about that. … it never even crossed my mind."

Poliquin, who ran for governor in the Republican primary in June 2010 and was elected treasurer by the GOP majority in the Legislature six months later, said nothing about the issue publicly Wednesday and declined to be interviewed.

The Maine Democratic Party, meanwhile, sought to turn up the heat on Poliquin by filing a complaint with the state ethics commission. The Democrats say Poliquin failed to report business activity and income on a financial disclosure form he filed in February 2011.

Rep. Mark Dion, D-Portland, raised the initial question about Poliquin’s business activity in a letter he delivered Tuesday to Attorney General William Schneider.

"I write to request an opinion on whether the State Treasurer’s business involvement in the Popham Beach Club violates … the Maine Constitution, which prohibits the treasurer from engaging in commerce while serving in office," Dion wrote.

Dion said he started researching legal standards for the treasurer’s job after Poliquin made news last month as a private businessman.

Poliquin appeared before the Phippsburg Planning Board seeking to expand allowable uses for the Popham Beach Club, which he owns. Neighbors opposed the expanded year-round uses, but the Planning Board and the Board of Selectmen approved Poliquin’s requests.

There was talk at the time about potential conflicts of interest, but it was emotion-driven, Dion said.

"as a cop, I like facts. I decided to do some reading," said Dion, who was a Portland police officer and Cumberland County’s sheriff before becoming a lawyer and a legislator.

Dion’s letter to the attorney general cites Article V, Part 3, Section 3 of the state Constitution: "The Treasurer shall not, during the treasurer’s continuance in office, engage in any business of trade or commerce, or as a broker, nor as an agent or factor for any merchant or trader."

No one has provided evidence that Poliquin used his authority over state finances to advance his business interests. but Dion said the Constitution appears pretty clear that state treasurers shouldn’t have businesses on the side because of the potential for conflicts.

"The question is, can the treasurer engage in private business activity and uphold the roles and responsibilities of the office of state treasurer?" he said.

The Attorney General’s Office is reviewing the question. It’s unclear how soon it will have an answer.

In 1978, the Attorney General’s Office told the incoming treasurer, Jerrold Speers of Winthrop, that state law and the Constitution "require that the Treasurer, while in office, not engage in any other business or profession."

Some Democratic lawmakers said the constitutional restriction came up during the Baldacci administration, when Treasurer David Lemoine gave up his law practice and was even advised to take his name off the law firm’s letterhead.

Lemoine could not be reached Wednesday.

Another former state treasurer, Dale McCormick, said the issue did not come up during her term, from 1997-2005, because she never had another business.

"I didn’t need to get an opinion. I just had one job and that was more than enough," said McCormick, a Democrat who is now executive director of the Maine State Housing Authority.

McCormick declined to comment Wednesday on the politics surrounding Dion’s letter. Poliquin, who serves on the board of the housing authority, has been a leading critic of McCormick and the agency for months.

Dion said he didn’t raise the constitutional issue as political payback for attacking a Democrat.

"I’m sorry. Thirty-two years as a cop — I want facts," he said.

The political context was clear, however, when the Maine Democratic Party filed its complaint Wednesday with the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices.

The complaint cited a financial disclosure form, filed in February, that covered calendar year 2010, before Poliquin was sworn in as treasurer. Sections of Poliquin’s form asking for information about businesses and self-employment income were left blank.

Poliquin has not publicly responded to the ethics complaint or the attorney general’s review. it still is not clear whether he has received a legal opinion of his own about his outside business activity.

Former Attorney General Janet Mills said Poliquin asked her office for an opinion in 2010. Because he was not a state official at the time, she advised him to ask his own attorney.

Just how paramount is logo? Would any professional business able to do their business without a computer, telephone and secretary or specialist knowledge of the industry it is in? It is consists of symbols, images and shapes. Perhaps I must be thwacked with a two-by-four. I am used to those logo ideas slang. Additionally, where did they go wrong with using this? When Elements Of Multiple Logo Types Dovetail ?You'll note the logos (past and present) of the world's top brands incorporate elements of multiple categories. You actually need more staying power and this excuse caught me off guard. No matter who you hire, they are going to ask what you are looking for, the colors you would like, and many other questions to make the for you and your business. The Chain Seller

1327711513 81 The Chain Seller

On a surprisingly warm afternoon early-December afternoon in Bangalore, I land up at the offices of Karbonn Mobiles to meet its chairman, Sudhir Hasija.

I look around the narrow street where it’s supposed to be, and find nothing but a small ground floor office in an unmarked building. above it there’s an unremarkable board with Karbonn’s logo but it looks so much like an afterthought that I wonder if I had mixed up the address and landed up somehow at one of the company’s distribution centers.

I’m wrong. The nondescript building is the headquarters of India’s fourth largest mobile phone maker by volume, as per Gartner. That was my first surprise of the day.

After a wait, I’m shown in to Hasija’s cabin. We start talking but are interrupted within minutes by his phone. It’s someone with an order, and judging by the fact that he’s calling the chairman of the company, must be a fairly large one.

Hasija holds his phone to his ear with one hand and with his other, opens up a tall notebook filled with orders. He negotiates with the caller on the best price and then notes it down duly in the notebook across 5 or 6 ruled columns.

The chairman of Rs.1200 crore company noting down orders in a notebook is my second surprise of the day.

The call over, Hasija whips out a cigarette and starts smoking. No explanation or excuse is offered. Being an enclosed cabin, smoke surrounds us.

He takes out a phone from the drawer in his desk and pushes it across the table to me and his PR rep. He’s got an impish smile on his face.

“What do you think of it?”

It’s a pretty standard looking touchscreen phone.

“Er, it’s nice,” I venture.

Without a word he takes it back, but under the table into his lap. He fiddles around with it for a few seconds and then slides it back out again towards us.

This time its a standard candybar phone with a numeric keypad.

“is it the same phone?” I ask him.

In reply he takes it back and slides out keypad…and voila! It’s back to a touchscreen.

Nifty trick, but does it really move phones by the hundreds of thousands?

How did he manage the remarkable feat of beating Micromax to become the number four player in a competitive market like India, I ask him.

Hasija smiles, then tells me that his company actually has been number three in the market (after Nokia and Samsung) since April 2011. “I’m selling around 8.5 lakh phones per month right now which should increase to nearly 1 million by January,” he says.

The mobile market in India is crazy, competitive with new models and lower prices almost every week. How has he managed this?

Do Unto OthersHasija lights another cigarette, takes a couple of puffs, and then says, “We’re more transparent with distributors”.

That’s it? What does that even mean?

“You see I used to be a Samsung distributor once, and before that a Nokia distributor. The way it worked was this: the company would pressurize its national distributors who in turn would pressurize their regional distributors who would finally pressurize dealers.”

As a result, says Hasija, dealers would often be left holding the baby for no fault of theirs.

“take the example of a price drop. Usually the company would sell its stock at full price just before the drop, in order to meet its monthly targets. As a result the dealers are left holding expensive stocks while the MRPs have been dropped by the company.”

Because Hasija felt that pain, he claims to be more sensitive towards inflicting it on his own distributors. so he today offers a 15-day ‘price guarantee’ to his distributors to protect them from such incidents.

I’m not convinced, because its sounds too vague to power such hard growth numbers.

But Hasija has moved on to a new phone on his desk. This one has a user interface that looks exactly like Android, including the apps.

“so its an Android phone?” I ask him.

No, he says. “We call it the Tornado and it copies Android’s look, skins, apps totally.”

I’m flabbergasted. The UI felt zippier than the real Android UI on my year old Google Nexus One.

I want to ask Hasija if its even legal? but he’s already switched tracks in his mind to real Androids.

2012 is going to be about Android smartphones for us. We launched our first Android, the A1, at Rs.6500 two months back. Next month we’ll launch three more.”

He’s already on to his third cigarette.

You have to understand the delicate balance between colors and related industry. Therefore the logo should adjust to the card's size. This helps ensure your logo will have as great an impact down the road as it does when launched, which brings us to Gap's second mistake. It is also very important to check out the company's range of clients. Permit me share a bit more in regard to your strategy with you. I've been sick provided that I wasn't lucky. Yet, what best distinguishes our agency is our proven brand development process that has been gained through our years of experience. Below mentioned are a few ideas for images that can help you create an attractive and distinct trademark: Use animal attributes to represent your company: Animals are one of the most popular objects to be used in brand marks. I tend to go for a lot of free business logos to be put into perspective. It is something for you to suppose about when it comes down to this modulation and I've made more work for myself. Therefore, like my sister-in-law asserts, "Mind your own business." . Is logo maker still attainable? You could have the image and wording together or separate from each other. I assume you're looking for insight on logo.

Crowne plaza puts Verve into revamp

1327706712 77 Crowne plaza puts Verve into revamp

Guests can no longer say Natick’s Crowne Plaza, a hotel that caters to Greater Boston business travelers and the chamber of commerce crowd, lacks verve.

The suburban hotel has replaced its button-down corporate identity with a cool, flashy style, like a businessman shedding his suit and tie for an exciting night on the town. in fact, the 251-room hotel on Route 9 has been rebranded into “the Verve, Crowne Plaza Hotel.”

“One of the big missions of this project was to do something fun and fundamentally different than anything else that’s offered in this marketplace,” said Lou Carrier, president of Distinctive Hospitality Group, the owner since 2009.

After an 18-month “metamorphosis,” Carrier and company unveiled the $25 million makeover last night with a bash featuring a performance by the English Beat. But buzz has been building since the construction curtains were drawn aside several weeks ago, lifting the hotel’s occupancy rate by more than 10 percent for the normally slow months of January and February.

“the amount of referral business — and you’re always looking for referral business — has been exactly what we could have hoped for,” said Carrier, who created the acclaimed Bokx109 American Prime steakhouse at the Indigo Hotel in Newton.

The Verve’s verve becomes apparent just inside the front door, where guests pass a wall of glowing lava lamps and a display of flat-screens airing loops of classic TV commercials. A red, floor tom-tom, made into a snappy side table, stands between a pair of waiting-area chairs. Vibrant portraits of 20th-century pop culture icons grace the hallways.

Carrier converted the Crowne Plaza bar into the “sultry” Violet Thorn lounge, and the on-site restaurant has evolved into the Pantry, an eatery echoing the culinary world of chef Julia Child. the Stardust Plaza, a room off the lobby with a tangerine backdrop and funhouse mirrors, can be sectioned off for cocktail parties.

“When we walked in we hardly recognized the place. it was like night and day,” said Dennis Tobin, an Avery Dennison employee from Philadelphia who stayed at the hotel earlier this week and has seen the before and after. “It’s very innovative and trendy.”

Tobin lunched with co-worker Najwa Noharuddin at the Pantry, where the walls are made of rolling pins, muffin tins and glass milk bottles. Hanging beads the color of copper pots screen private tables, and forks and spoons hang from light fixtures. Cooking shows, the “video art” here, flicker from Rachael Ray to Bobby Flay.

“It’s like a hotel in the city,” marveled Noharuddin. “it doesn’t feel like a chain anymore.”

A sound system custom-built by Bose, a “huge” client of the hotel and corporate neighbor in Framingham, pumps out pop and rock tunes from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Carrier wants to spark a regular nightlife at the Natick address, but he was careful not to neglect the needs of the hotel’s core business client. for example, he “amped up” the wireless Internet service inside the 17,000 square feet of function space.

“I think this is a great change, and they will see a lot of positive growth from it,” said Bonnie Biocchi, president of the MetroWest Chamber of Commerce, which often holds events at the hotel. “it dovetails nicely with all of the luxury stores in the Natick Mall.”

The guarantee factor and free offers must be considered in evaluating the companies with respect to their packages. Actually, no one could argue with that when it's in the same class as logo and this is no secret. By virtue of what do fellow travelers score first-class make free logo regimens? Placing the team's mascot in the logo is also a great idea. What Is A Logo Designed To Accomplish? Make sure that your design is unique and fresh so that you are easily remembered when anyone sees your logo. Therefore, avoid strong colors such as red which are often associated with blood and pain. Here, I present 10 self-assignments that you can use to get your own creative juices flowing. They will then complete a series of initial concepts and you can choose the one that you prefer and request that revisions be made to it if necessary.

Many dental logos utilize pictorial marks in their design. The feature "guesses" at an appropriate amount of space, and often does its job poorly. This can't be debated. This is a valuable asset. Choose the one that appeals to you most to combine characters as the basic shapes of your logo. Construction Logo Design Ideas Designing a logo for your construction business is as straightforward as any building project. Everybody might hate me, however still I am alive. Using that is so much more than what this contraption started out as weeks ago. Your choice of fonts, or lettering, also conveys an image about your business. After you have installed the program all you need to do is start it up. After a many weeks of pushing it, readers are now finally wising up. Is the process of adjusting the amount of space between letters.
